Eligibility, Participation and Duration

  1. Any person who has not been disqualified from participating in a previous derby may participate in the derby.
  2. Participation occurs when an entry ticket is purchased and validated, as provided in these rules.
  3. All participants must possess a 2008 Alaska sport fishing license and required stamps.
  4. The derby shall commence Thursday, 12:01 AM, May 1, 2008 and close Saturday, 9:00 PM, May 31, 2008—Jerry's Meats and DeHart's being the only weigh-in stations available at derby's end.
  5. Fish may be entered at the weigh-in stations only during times specified below.
  6. Participants may fish from a boat or from shore.
  7. Fish caught by a "proxy" may not be entered.
  8. Any person caught breaking the rules, or disqualified for any reason decided by the Derby Committee, will be ineligible to participate for two (2) years + the year the participant was disqualified.

Entry Fee and Tickets

  1. Each participant, regardless of age, must possess an entry ticket prior to the time fishing occurs. Only ticket holders are eligible for prizes.
  2. Early bird purchase is available at $35 beginning April 18 and ending April 30; May 1, tickets are $40.
  3. Entry tickets become valid when the ticket is paid for, countersigned by the selling agent, and the date and time of purchase is stated on the ticket.
  4. A ticket, once validated, remains valid for the duration of the derby.

Eligible Fish

  1. Only gutted, gilled, fresh, unfrozen King Salmon may be entered.
  2. Fish must be entered at an authorized weigh-in station [listed above.]
  3. Participants may enter more than one fish in the derby, but only the largest fish will be eligible for a prize.
  4. Prizes will be awarded solely on the basis of the weight of entered fish.
  5. Entered fish remains the property of the participant.
  6. All entered fish must be taken in a manner, location, and time permitted by applicable sport fishing regulations and these derby rules.
    NOTE:  All rules and regulations of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game apply.
  7. Any person who has a reasonable belief that a fish submitted for entry was not taken in a manner which complies with applicable law or derby rules, may notify the Spring King Derby officials--please email derby personnel by clicking here or call 463-7375 for further information.
    1. Upon notification, the officials may hold a hearing to determine whether the fish was caught in the manner required by these rules.
    2. If a hearing is held, the participant submitting the fish for entry shall be given reasonable notice of the hearing and an opportunity to appear and give testimony.
    3. At the conclusion of the hearing, the officials shall render a written decision which shall be final and binding on the participant.

Donated Fish

The Alumni Scholarship Assistance Program gladly accepts fish for donation. These fish will be provided to elders and handicapped individuals. Additionally, the Juneau Raptor Center requests your fish heads--please call 586-8393 for more information. Thank you for your consideration.

This derby is an annual fundraiser for the Central Council of Tlingít& Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska's Alumni Scholarship Assistance Program (ASAP).  Funds raised from ticket sales are transferred and augmented with other ASAP fundraisers.  From here, monies are awarded to those eligible enrolled Tlingít& Haida higher education applicants.  Specific ASAP program requirements, application and recipient information can be seen by clicking here
