Derby Rules & Regulations

Eligibility, Participation and Duration

  1. Any person who has not been disqualified from participating in a previous derby may participate in the derby.
  2. Participation occurs when an entry ticket is purchased and validated, as provided in these rules.
  3. All participants must possess a 2010 Alaska sport fishing license and required stamps.
  4. All Alaska Department of Fish & Game sports fishing rules apply.
  5. The derby shall commence Saturday, 12:01 AM, May 1, 2010 and close Monday, 7:00 PM, May 31, 2010.
  6. Fish may be entered at the weigh-in stations only during times specified below.
  7. Participants may fish from a boat [downriggers are permitted] or from shore.
  8. Non-derby participants are prohibited from fishing off the same boat. However, one may go along for the boat ride to enjoy time with family & friends.
  9. Fish caught by a "proxy" may not be entered.

    ** If you continue fishing after catching your sports bag limit, all fish caught that day are considered proxy fish and cannot be entered. Effective 5:00 p.m.; Thursday, 05/27/2010.

  10. Any person caught breaking the rules, or disqualified for any reason decided by the Derby Committee, will be ineligible to participate for two (2) years + the year the participant was disqualified.

Entry Tickets & Weigh-in Stations

  1. Each participant, regardless of age, must possess an entry ticket prior to the time fishing occurs. Only ticket holders are eligible for prizes.
  2. Entry tickets become valid when the ticket is paid for, countersigned by the selling agent, and the date and time of purchase is stated on the ticket.
  3. A ticket, once validated, remains valid for the duration of the derby.
  4. Sellers are Alaskan & Proud To Be store, Harri Plumbing & Heating, Western Auto Marine, Rayco Sales and DeHart's Auke Bay Store.

Eligible Fish

  1. Only gutted, gilled, fresh, unfrozen King Salmon may be entered.
  2. Fish must be entered at an authorized weigh-in station [listed above.]
    • The participant's entry ticket must be presented with the fish the participant seeks to enter in the derby.
    • Weigh-in station personnel will complete a Spring King Derby weigh-in ticket for participants entering fish for prize entry. Information written are the weight of the fish, date & time it was entered and the entry ticket number of the participant.
  3. Participants may enter more than one fish in the derby, but only the largest fish will be eligible for a prize.
  4. Prizes will be awarded solely on the basis of the weight of entered fish.
  5. Entered fish remains the property of the participant.
  6. All entered fish must be taken in a manner, location, and time permitted by applicable sport fishing regulations and these derby rules.
    NOTE:  All rules and regulations of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game apply.
  7. Any person who has a reasonable belief that a fish submitted for entry was not taken in a manner which complies with applicable law or derby rules, may notify the Spring King Derby officials Email derby personnel by clicking here or call 463-7133 for further information.
    1. Upon notification, the officials may hold a hearing to determine whether the fish was caught in the manner required by these rules.
    2. If a hearing is held, the participant submitting the fish for entry shall be given reasonable notice of the hearing and an opportunity to appear and give testimony.
    3. At the conclusion of the hearing, the officials shall render a written decision which shall be final and binding on the participant.

Donated Fish

The Alumni Scholarship Assistance Program gladly accepts fish for donation. These fish will be provided to elders and handicapped individuals. Additionally, the Juneau Raptor Center requests your fish heads--please call 586-8393 for more information. Thank you for your consideration.

  • north to Point St. Mary at Berner’s Bay
  • west to Danger Point
  • south to Point Couverden
  • southeast to Lizard’s Head just past Funter Bay
  • and southeast from Twin Point to Pt. Styleman

  • Daily and final standings will be posted on this web site.
  • Listen 8:25 am every Monday, during the month of May, on KINY with Kelly Perez, the Morning Show.

Prizes & Taxes

  • The Alumni Scholarship Assistance Program will not be responsible for any prizes donated by merchants who do not give as pledged or if any prizes prove to be less valuable than shown in the donor's estimates. The values shown for prizes listed are set by the donors.
  • Taxes for prizes are the responsibility of the individual winners. Cash prize winners will be asked to provide their taxpayer identification number for this purpose.
  • Prizes are final; no exchanges.
  • Prizes shall be awarded in numerical order, according to winner’s place. In the case of a tie, the earliest entered weighed fish will receive the higher standing.

Awards Night

  • Awards will be presented at the Andrew Hope Building, 320 West Willoughby Avenue, on Friday, June 4, 2010 from Noon through 3:00 p.m.
  • Prize winners, or a designated representative, are encouraged to attend and claim their prize.
  • Presentation of derby entry and weigh-in tickets are required for prize release. 
  • Every effort will be made to mail the prize to the winner if they are not available for awards night or pick-up however, verification through receipt of winner’s entry & weigh-in ticket are required to assure winner’s address for mailing and validation purposes.

Derby Staff and Contact Info

This derby is an annual fundraiser for the Central Council of Tlingít& Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska's Alumni Scholarship Assistance Program (ASAP).  Funds raised from ticket sales are transferred and augmented with other ASAP fundraisers.  From here, monies are awarded to those eligible enrolled Tlingít& Haida higher education applicants.  Specific ASAP program requirements, application and recipient information can be seen by clicking here
